Income Tax for Freelancers and Content Creators in Bangladesh (2026-27)
By the Rebate Bhai team · Updated · Figures checked against the NBR Income Tax Guide 2026-27
If you freelance or create content in Bangladesh, the headline is good news: that income is exempt from income tax until 30 June 2027. But the exemption has a condition that is easy to break, it doesn't cover everything people assume, and it disappears entirely if you file late. Here is how it works for assessment year 2026-27.
The exemption in one paragraph
Part 1 of the Sixth Schedule to the Income Tax Act 2023 exempts income that a resident, or a non-resident Bangladeshi, earns from a list of IT-enabled businesses between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2027 — on condition that all of the income from those businesses comes in by bank transfer. Freelancing and content creation are on the list by name.
What's on the list
- Software: AI-based and blockchain-based solution development, software development and customisation, software as a service (SaaS), mobile app development, software test labs, web listing and website development, IT assistance and software maintenance.
- Data and security: digital data analytics and data science, cyber security, digital data entry and processing, document conversion, imaging and digital archiving, and geographic information services.
- Creative work: digital animation, digital graphics design, e-learning platforms and e-publication, and freelancing and content creation.
- Outsourcing: robotics process outsourcing and call-centre services.
The bank-transfer condition
As written, the condition is all-or-nothing: all income from these activities must arrive by bank transfer. In practice, have clients and platforms pay into your Bangladeshi bank account — directly, or through a payment service that pays out to your bank — and keep the trail: bank statements, and the remittance or encashment certificates your bank issues for foreign payments. Cash for exempt work puts the whole exemption at risk. The law says bank transfer and doesn't mention mobile wallets, so if a client pays you through bKash or Nagad, the safe course is to move that work onto bank payments.
What isn't exempt
- Selling goods online. A Facebook-page or other f-commerce shop is ordinary business income, taxed at your slab rates.
- A salary. The exemption covers income from carrying on these services yourself; if you are on a company's payroll as a developer or designer, your pay is employment income, taxed like any other salary.
- Interest, rent and capital gains — taxed under their own rules.
- Income earned after 30 June 2027, unless the exemption is extended.
The NBR's worked example
Example 21 in the Income Tax Guide follows a woman entrepreneur with five sources of income in income year 2025-26:
| Income | Amount | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancing | ৳2,50,000 | Exempt — IT-enabled services |
| Facebook and YouTube content | ৳4,75,000 | Exempt — IT-enabled services |
| Bakery profit (SME Foundation-registered, ৳70,00,000 turnover) | ৳7,50,000 | Exempt — women-owned SME up to ৳70,00,000 turnover |
| Saree sales through a Facebook page | ৳6,30,000 | Taxable business income |
| Sanchaypatra interest | ৳20,000 | Taxable |
| Total taxable income | ৳6,50,000 |
As a woman, her first ৳4,50,000 is tax-free, so her tax is ৳20,000 on the remaining ৳2,00,000. Her ৳72,000 DPS earns a ৳7,200 rebate; the Sanchaypatra she cashed before maturity earns none. After the rebate and the ৳2,000 deducted from her interest, she pays ৳10,800 — on ৳21,25,000 of income in all.
You still have to file
Exempt income doesn't excuse you from filing — having it is one of the listed situations where a return is compulsory, and the NBR tells taxpayers to show exempt income properly in the return. Declaring it also gives you a record that explains the money in your bank account.
The late-filing trap
This is the rule most likely to cost a freelancer money. If you file after the assessment year ends — after 30 June 2027 for this year's return — the tax is calculated as if the exemption didn't exist, and you pay 10% additional tax (at least ৳5,000) on top. Only a short list of exemptions survives a late return, including government pension, provident-fund income, legally remitted foreign earnings, gifts from close family and the salary exemption. IT-enabled services are not on it. A general-category freelancer with ৳15,00,000 of income owes nothing on it if the return is on time; filed late, the same income carries ৳1,70,000 of tax plus ৳17,000 of additional tax.
The in-year charges apply as well: from January the additional tax is the higher of 2% of the tax payable or ৳3,000. Read literally, that minimum can apply even when little or no tax is payable — so the simplest protection is to file by 31 December. Filing dates and charges →
When your income is taxable
- Business income is taxed at the normal slab rates after allowable business expenses. Personal spending can't be claimed as a business expense.
- If your last assessed income was over ৳10 lakh (leaving out capital gains and one-off income), you pay advance tax in four equal instalments: 15 September, 15 December, 15 March and 15 June.
- The investment rebate only works against taxable income — its 3% base leaves out exempt income. If all your income is exempt, a rebate saves you nothing.
A checklist for 2026-27
- Get paid by bank transfer, every time.
- Keep bank statements and remittance or encashment certificates for every payment.
- Keep exempt work separate from anything taxable, such as selling goods or a local salary.
- File by 31 December 2026 to avoid any charge, and never after 30 June 2027.
- Show your exempt income in the return.
- Plan for 1 July 2027, when the exemption is due to end.
